Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is the fourth main video game in the Wing Commander series, produced by Origin Systems and released by Electronic Arts for PC 30 years ago on February 4, 1996 and PlayStation on October 14, 1997.

The first game set after the end of the Terran-Kilrathi War, Wing Commander IV depicts a galaxy in the midst of a chaotic transition, with human civilians, Kilrathi survivors and former soldiers on both sides attempting to restabilize their lives.

The game featured among others Mark Hamill as Christopher 'Maverick' Blair and John Rhys-Davies as James 'Paladin' Taggart. Whereas Wing Commander III scenes were filmed on green screen backgrounds, Wing Commander IV used actual sets.[1]

Despite being a later game it actually ran more smoothly on a lower spec machine than Wing Commander III thanks to Frank Savage optimization work.

It was the first video game with a budget of over $10 Millions.[2] It missed the initial release date of Christmas 1995.

It spawned a TV show and a movie the next year.
